About the artworkWhat is truth? This appears to be an old bathroom, a public lavatory and a street. But the outer edges of the pictures reveal that the environments are stage sets, devoid of life or history. Here, the gap between documentary and enactment is obvious. The rooms claim to be something they are not, in the same way that photos often trick the viewer into believing they are true accounts. Miriam Bäckström's pictures are rooted in 1980s post-modernism, when the genuinity and veracity of the photographic image was discussed and examined. The camera is lying!
