About the artworkSimon Starling produced this work in 1998-1999 as part of the exhibition series Moderna Museet Projekt. In the course of the project, a model maker built a radio-controlled model aeroplane equipped with a tiny video camera. The exhibition space included an architectural scale model of Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz's functionalist cemetery complex Skogskyrkogården (The Woodland Cemetery) which was completed in the 1930s. The model aeroplane was used to fly over the cemetery and film it. The film can be seen here. Explorations of models, transformations and circulations relating to our social and material reality are central to Starling's art. His work often takes the form of a process.
