About the artworkChildren were a recurring subject in Mollie Faustman’s paintings and illustrations for children’s books. She studied at the Valand Academy in Gothenburg, before moving on to Henri Matisse’s academy in Paris. Faustman belonged to the same circle of painters as Vera Nilsson, and they exhibited together. A child in a landscape may be a conventional motif, but her style is decidedly modern, with brilliant colours and pure shapes. Faustman was also known as a feminist columnist. Under the pen name of Vagabonde, she treated readers to her sharp observations in Dagens Nyheter and Idun. This painting was acquired with funding from Konstnärshjälpen, initiated by the government in 1923 to help artists financially in the wake of the First World War and the Spanish flu, when few Swedes could afford to buy art.
