About the artworkAgnes Cleve Jon-And studied in Gothenburg before moving to Paris, where she belonged to the same circles as Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky. In Lane in Napoli she portrays the view of this Italian town in a modernist style. The slightly cubist idiom blends with the depiction of the south Italian buildings. The plants and houses, the few people who have braved the dazzling sunlight, are highly stylised. The steep perspective is reminiscent of other paintings from the same period. Abstraction lies round the corner, but there remains a narrative trait that is characteristic of Nordic artists in their encounter with the Italian countryside.
