About the artworkThe series Old Age starts with The Precipice. Ivar Lo-Johansson, author of the book published in 1949 by the magazine Vi, concludes his work with the following words: "It is our conscience that has caused us to debate the issue of old age which this book is about." Together with the photographer Sven Järlås, he travelled around Sweden to report on the care of the elderly in a candid, not to say brutally frank, way. There is nothing ingratiating in this portrayal of old people's poverty, hidden away in the institutional homes. With dignity and respect for the individual the author and photographer together manage to convey an initiated picture of what it was like to be old in Sweden in the 1940s, the dark side of the modern era.
