About the artworkBarbro Östlihn builds her works like one builds a wall. She applies paint according to a system, with great patience and precision. She developed a habit at an early stage of working nocturnally, with artificial light. Pawn Shop is from 1962, the year after Östlihn and her then husband, the artist Öyvind Fahlström, had moved to New York. They were soon introduced to the circles of Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns and Claes Oldenburg, to name but a few. Östlihn went on long walks, taking myriads of pictures of buildings in the mega-city with her instamatic camera. In Pawn Shop she captures the windows facing the street. The pawnbroker symbol - three golden balls originating from the coat of arms of the Medici family - evoke a silent wonder. What goes on behind these facades?
