About the artworkJosef Albers began working on his major series the Homage to the Square in 1950. He would produce hundreds of versions of the same basic composition of three or four squares nested inside on another, all with their own inner light, their own sense of space, until his death in 1976. This work forms part of the sereis and challenges our perception of colours and scale. Albers wrote of Homage to the Square: "They all are of different palettes, and, therefore, so to speak, of different climates. Choice of the colours used, as well as their order, is aimed at an interaction - influencing and changing each other forth and back."
