About the artworkWhen Félix Nadar began taking pictures of Paris from a balloon in 1856, this was an entirely new idea. Nadar, who was an inventor, writer and newly-fledged photographer, wanted to make history. He felt that the sublime views from a balloon deserved to be photographed and therefore created an aerial laboratory in the balloon gondola. Initially, he had developers and a darkroom in the actual gondola, but then went on to use a new method with glass plates. Today, in the age of aviation and drones, aerial motifs are not unusual, but they are still as fascinating. In the late 1800s, Nadar’s pictures provided breath-taking new perspectives on the city, with its gridwork of streets, lines and graphic patterns.
