About the artwork

Of all the artists in the Russian avant-garde, Aleksandr Rodtjenko was the one who was most interested in creating a new form of art for a new society. Art should serve the revolution and urge the people to see the world around them in a new way. With his “spatial constructions” made of everyday material Rodtjenko abandoned the illusory spaces of painting in order to achieve a true spatiality that could be experienced from all sides without a front and back. He created the first freestanding spatial construction in 1918. Through the hanging constructions based on geometric shapes that he made 1920–21 the sculptures were even liberated from the floor, achieving even greater autonomy.
