About the artworkIn this painting, as in Meadow Flowers, the naivist Eric Hallström plays with the perspective. Steep angles characterise the panoramic view of Haga. The people resting on the lawns, the sailing boats and trains fill it with a flurry of carefree summer activities. A discerning observer will discover a myriad of details. This is a playful, imaginative painting - naive and narrating in the best possible sense. Hallström wants to portray a day in the open and there must be no limitations. In some ways, this represents a divergence from the French-inspired modernists, who emphasised colour in their paintings, but Hallström also embraces the pleasure of using colours and shapes to tell us about a summer's day.
