About the artworkVictor Brauner joined the Surrealist movement in Paris in 1932, where he worked closely with Constantin Brâncuși, Yves Tanguy and Alberto Giacometti. Inspired by mythology, folklore and the occult, interests he inherited from his father, Brauner created a distinctive visual world populated by hybrid beings. This painting’s vivid colour and flat perspective draw on tarot as well as Egyptian and Mexican visual tradition. The motif reflects Brauner’s lifelong fascination with the gaze and the eyes. He lost one of his eyes in an accident in 1938, when he stepped in to break up a fight between two artist friends. “All my creative work revolves around vision and attacks on the eyes”, he once said.
