About the artworkTorsten Andersson explored painting in the postmodernist era, when both language and image were challenged. Can we ever understand each other, and is it possible to say something that has never been said before? He saw as his mission to ﬁnd his own path in painting, his own language. The answer lay in what he called “realistic portraits of abstract ﬁctive sculptures”, or depictions of sculptures that don’t exist. The paintings are neither wholly abstract nor ﬁgurative, but both. Despite their apparent simple, almost sloppy style, the process of making them was very meticulous. It involved producing masses of drawings. Most of them he destroyed, but the ones he liked were used as starting points for new drawings. After again destroying the ones that didn’t make the mark, a few drawings remained and these were the ones he based his paintings on.
