Dreams are one of surrealism’s main sources of inspiration. “Debris of Dreams”, an artist’s book with text by the Croatian dramaturge Radovan Ivšić (1921–2009) and images by Toyen, is a presentation of the subconscious dream world. With deeply evocative imagery, Toyen depicts female genitals, a blossoming breast, strands of hair, leopards, birds and claws; symbols of eroticism and female physicality. Today, Toyen would probably be described as queer, highlighting gender and revealing the fluidity of gender roles. For Toyen – possibly an abbreviated form of the French word "citoyen" (citizen), and a pseudonym for Marie Čermínová – it was important that her name was gender-neutral.
