About the artworkSwedish artist Nell Walden became a key figure of Der Sturm, the magazine and art gallery of the German expressionists in Berlin, and immediately found herself in the inner circle of the movement after marrying its founder, Herwarth Walden, in 1912. Together with her husband, she ran the gallery and helped promote the new art through the magazine. Walden also participated in organising some twenty exhibitions in Scandinavia and built an impressive collection of European avantgarde art. She herself did not start painting until after studying at Der Sturm’s art school in 1915. Nell Walden was long regarded as Sweden’s first abstract artist, since the works by the pioneer Hilma af Klint, made during the same period, were kept from the public eye.
