About the artworkLate at night, or perhaps early in the morning, a student couple is walking home in the moonlight. The summer night is warm and there is no need for jackets. Uppsala Cathedral is silhouetted against the sky. The woman on her bike adds movement; and the pale-blue boards protecting the trees and the fence around the gardens bring rhythm to the composition. Bror Hjorth was a painter, sculptor and illustrator. To give his paintings more weight and volume, he often made rough, carved frames for them, which he gilded slightly, but not much, so they wouldn’t be too elegant.
