About the artworkThe peacefulness and the beautiful light of the village of Céret in southern France made it a Mecca for painters. The rich and evocative treatment of pure and clear colour in the work of cubist Juan Gris, whose paintings have a uniquely clear structure and depiction, was inspired by this light. The landscape is fragmented in the typical cubist manner, and yet the picture forms a strong, coherent totality. He strove for a style of painting that was "not meticulous but precise, the opposite of bad painting, which is meticulous without being precise". Juan Gris was his French pseudonym; he was born in Madrid as José Victoriano Carmel Carlos González-Peréz.
