About the artworkBarbro Bäckström's choice of materials reveals a joy in experimenting and great sensitivity. She often used industrial materials - concrete, plastic, asphalt and corten steel. The materials she used were not primarily associated with nature but with the 1960s urban reality, with an impersonal tone and mass-production. Barbro Bäckström grew up on the island of Vindö in the Stockholm archipelago and periodically took nature as her theme. Her works were never directly depictive, however, but attempt rather to portray movement and power and energy in transition. A complete stillness and calm reigns in the work Lake Insjön. By scratching into asphalt through a semi-transparent drawing paper, the artist evokes memories of a dark lake.
