About the artwork
In 1912, Hilding Linnqvist dropped out of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, sick of the old-fashioned teaching. Instead, he studied Swedish medieval art, Ernst Josephson’s paintings from his period of mental illness, and Swedish poetry. The atmosphere in Children in the Meadow is dreamy. The two girls are in their own world, far beyond the boathouses and the grey-blue twilight. The fairytale mood is enhanced by the bird in the middle of the picture. In the course of his long oeuvre, Linnqvist returned repeatedly to the floral theme. Here he evokes the scent of wild pansies and dog roses, wild strawberries and Swedish summer.
