About the artworkThe encounter with Asian art inspired many artists in the early decades of the 20th century. Not only did they find new subjects but also entirely new pictorial traditions. In several of his still-lifes, Einar Jolin taps into this exotic vein, as in The Indian God. Here, he has arranged three objects on a table top that provides colour, together with some shrubs, to this otherwise greyish-yellow painting. In the centre is Ganesha, god of wisdom. The serene composition balances between being a play with purely decorative effects and a meditative portrayal of a mood. Jolin is a masterly raconteur of the non-event.
