About the artworkNils Nilsson's Refugees is a comment on the debate around the Spanish civil war. The same year, Pablo Picasso declared his reaction to events in his large painting Guernica, which was exhibited at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937. Both paintings express human suffering and the horrors of war, how people are driven into exile from a war-torn Spain. The tone is heightened with blaring colours. When Nils Nilsson's painting was shown at Nationalmuseum, public opinion soon demanded that the work be purchased for the museum collection. But Refugees was considered too controversial. Prince Eugen, well-known for his anti-fascist opinions, bought the work and donated it to the museum to ensure that the painting was saved for posterity.
