About the artworkMollie Faustman was in the same circle of painters as Vera Nilsson and Maj Bring, with whom she also exhibited. She went to the Valand Academy in Gothenburg before pursuing her studies with Matisse in Paris. Blue and Red features one of Faustman's recurring themes - the child - which is also a key element in her books and picture-book illustrations. Mollie Faustman is perhaps best known for her feminist chronicles. Under the penname Vagabonde, she published her astute observations in the daily paper Dagens Nyheter, and the magazine Idun. "Women artists get a patronising pat on the head as long as they are bad enough, but woe betide them if they know what they want and know how to achieve it."
