About the artworkCrime Passionnel, or Drama of Love, is one of Dardel's best-known works. Against the background of an overfurnished drawing-room, with a flowery sofa and carpets of leopard, bear and tiger skins, a woman in pink shoots a dandy dressed in green. The witnesses of this terrible event are three dogs, two white peacocks and a horror-struck maid who is dropping the breakfast tray. Dardel used to joke about this composition, explaining that the maid came not with coffee but with hot chocolate. He offered no other explanation of the picture. He had earlier done a sketch of the painting, a small oil entitled "Lady in green pyjamas murdering gentleman in black" These two pictures feel at the same time jolly and macabre.
