About the artwork

Hreinn Fridfinnsson came across the story of the house turned inside out in the novel Islenskur Adall (Icelandic Aristocracy) written by  Thorbergur Thordarson in 1938. It relates how Solon Gudmundsson, an old eccentric living in a fishing village in north-west Iceland, decides to sell his house and build a new house out of wood and corrugated iron, but turning it inside out. The wallpaper was there to please people, and therefore it should be on the outside, etc. In the summer of 1974, Hreinn Fridfinnsson built a house according to this idea in the middle of an undeveloped part of Iceland. This house contains everything in the whole world - except the house itself, of course. The concept of "the wide world" has been reduced to the size of a small room confined by the walls and roof of the house.
