About the artworkAn old man and a kid. The scene radiates tenderness. When Marc Chagall painted this picture he was 43 and had lived in Paris for nearly a decade. Even before the war broke out in 1914, he had lived and worked among the cubists. It was long since he had been to his childhood town, Vitebsk in Belarus. In Vitebsk there were lots of queer old fellows who played the violin and told stories, and lots of goats. The old man and the goat appear to be floating towards the snow (cloud?) in the background. That's often how it is in Chagall's pictures. His childhood memories are like stories. And the storybook characters don't follow the laws of physics. That's why they never die.
