About the artworkAfter studying in Gothenburg under Carl Wilhelmson, Greta Knutson left for Paris in 1921. She was a student under André Lhote before marrying the dada poet Tristan Tzara. Her work was influenced strongly by the avant-garde currents in the city, but she continued to paint in a realistic style throughout the 1920s. She made her debut with the Optimists in 1928 and went on to exhibit with artists such as Alberto Giacometti and Vieira da Silva. Although this portrait of a girl is slightly stiff, it nevertheless demonstrates a great understanding for the play between volumes and ornamentation. The colouring is sensitive, subdued but clearly structured in a way that intimates her later more experimental work.
