About the artworkThrough the Der Sturm gallery in Berlin, Gösta Adrian-Nilson discovered cubism, expressionism and futurism and developed a style of painting combining these styles in a way that was unique in Swedish modernism. He presents us with a fragmented scenario of energetic movement and drama. As often with GAN, the motifs are distinctly masculine. Many of his geometric compositions celebrate the city and the technical progress of the new era, and also the male body – often with an erotic undercurrent. For GAN, painting was a means of opposing prevailing norms, and his works were constantly criticized by his contemporaries.
