About the artworkIsaac Grünewald was among the first painters to be inspired by Matisse and fauvism. He was an enthusiastic protagonist of modern art: "We should paint the colours of the Swedish countryside so that we convey the specifically Swedish character, but we should paint with international quality methods. The witches' cauldron of Paris is the life source of all other art, it is the chaotic, glowing, boiling soul of the art world. From here come the sediments that later assume their shape and become works of art. I believe that every self-respecting artist should dive into this cauldron." Portrait of a Lady probably depicts the artist's sister, Dora. She also modelled for Sigrid Hjertén, possibly because she was at hand since she was their babysitter.
