About the artworkTyra Lundgren painted this self-portrait in her Paris studio in 1921, the first year Swedish women were allowed to vote in a national election. She often used herself as a model, and claimed that the reasons were practical rather than self-centred. “You feel like painting and need a face”, she stated matter-of-factly. And yet, this image tempts us to think about identity and different states of mind. Is the gaze resigned, or contemplative? The features are remarkably androgynous in this and many of her other portraits. In some paintings she portrays herself coarsely; in others, elegantly dressed like a dandy. Tyra Lundgren’s fascination with style, clothes and hats makes details of this kind into significant aesthetic elements in her art.
