About the artworkMax Ernst, who worked as a painter, sculptor and printmaker, was an influential figure for both the Dadaists and the Surrealists. Among other things, he developed the technique of frottage – by rubbing a pencil or chalk over paper laid on top of textured surfaces such as wood, textiles, leaves and bark, he created random patterns that he later transformed into imaginative animals and landscapes. In L’évadé, part of his Histoire Naturelle series, Ernst uses frottage to produce a creature that mixes elements of fish and bird, giving the work a dreamlike, surreal quality. The technique was a way of exploring automatism, where the artist leaves reason behind to let the unconscious guide the creative process. The result is images that are both bizarre and beautiful, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.
