About the artworkAlready in 1934, that is, a year after Hitler had come to power in Germany, Albin Amelin produced the magazine Mänsklighet (Humanity) with the publishers Clarté. Hitler is portrayed on the cover as an executioner under the heading "The New Messiah". Mänsklighet is a clever anti-war satire with contributions from authors such as Pär Lagerkvist, Artur Lundkvist, Rudolf Värnlund, Harry and Moa Martinson and artists such as X-et, Vera Nilsson, Bror Hjorth and Simon Sörman. For a moment modernism and political radicalism join hands. The threat which is envisioned is clearly reminiscent of the First World War. No one could imagine just how horrific the Second World War would be. Only two issues of the magazine were ever published, due to distribution difficulties.
