About the artworkThea Ekström’s ink and watercolour painting resembles an image, perhaps a photograph or a drawing, that has been left to absorb moisture. The colours have bled, and other images seem to have transferred onto the paper. Like when stories overlap and get in the way of other stories, or when memories fade under the spread of forgetfulness. Some recognisable details emerge: birds, stitches and foliage. A kind of portal, that recurs in several of her other compositions from the 1960s, arches around the image. There is a longing for origins in her art, which in part turns it inwards, towards a spiritual reality and away from the world.
