About the artworkBarbro Bäckström explores the human body like a landscape. She uses modern-day hard materials - wire netting, steel and asphalt - to portray sensual human experiences. When she shapes the stiff wire netting she moves beyond the landmarks of traditional sculptural art - her works appear to oscillate between weightless drawings in air and highly tangible objects. The empty spaces are shaped to convey volume and monumentality. The billowing human bodies are imbued with life through the play of shadow that arises as we move before them. Rather than presenting a final statement, they merely suggest a shape characterised by vulnerability and transience.
