About the artworkLars Englund's works bear a distinct affinity with American minimalism in their exploration of modern materials - rubber, steel, carbon fibre, aluminium and plastics - in a non-figurative idiom. In the early 1960s, Englund began to look at materials that were untried in the art context, such as cement. His experiments led to pioneering consulting work in the cement and building industry, and eventually to commissions for works in public spaces. When Englund was asked to make a monumental sculpture for Huddinge Hospital in 1968, he designed a building kit out of transparent plastic, a Support Structure, with architectonic qualities. The object measured 7.6 x 5.2 x 3.2 metres in its original form and appeared to hover between sculpture and architecture.
