About the artworkIn the early 1960s, Niki de Saint Phalle aimed a loaded shotgun at her works and pulled the trigger. Bags and cans of paint embedded in plaster exploded and made the art works bleed like human beings. The act of shooting could be seen as a performance. Describing the act, she said she was aiming at all men, her brother, society, the Church and school. Throughout her career, Niki de Saint Phalle re-examined the personal scars and traumas that had once guided her to the artist profession. In the early 1960s, Niki de Saint Phalle made her international breakthrough. She was the only woman to be included in the Noveau Réalisme artist group, alongside Arman, Christo, Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely and Jacques Villeglé.
