About the artworkThe umbrella covered with sponges was presented at the first International Surrealist Exhibition in Paris in 1938, where it attracted much attention. The encounter between the masculine men’s umbrella and the sponge, an object primarily associated with cleaning women’s bare skin, conveyed clearly sexual undertones at the time. Paalen first made an image of the subject after being invited by André Breton to contribute an illustration to the complete literary works of the Comte de Lautréamont. There, in a poem, was the line that was so influential for the Surrealists, “as beautiful as the chance meeting on a dissecting table of a sewing machine and an umbrella”. The Surrealists liked to juxtapose thoughts and objects in order to create unexpected coincidences where reason did not rule. Selected exhibition history Mästerverken åter.
