About the artworkSpoerri belonged to a group of artists who met in Paris and called themselves Nouveaux Réalistes (New Realists), which also included artists like Yves Klein, Niki de Saint Phalle, Christo and Martial Raysse. The group's manifesto was written by the critic Pierre Restany in Milan in 1960. The group comprised a wide range of artistic expressions, but one uniting feature was a feeling of alienation about the abstract, expressionistic paintings of the Fifties and a commitment to depict or relate to their own time. The Spice Collection is a picture of its time. At the same time it creates a feeling of alienation and distance, even disgust at the objects it contains. This effect is reinforced by the "dirty" aesthetics in relation to the white spaces of art, which in the Sixties were even whiter.
