About the artworkGert Marcus's oeuvre is characterised by consistent concretism. After the Second World War, he opted for the object-less subject matter, and has remained faithful to his choice. Although nature is a recurring ingredient, the works never careen into realism. There is something exceedingly systematic about Gert Marcus's works, but the mathematical element is never allowed to take over or allowed to overshadow the sensual quality. Small variations between the works achieve the desired effect - barely perceptible changes of angle or near-invisible shifts. Relief I and II consist of a light and a dark object next to each other. While the surfaces are rough, the contours of the reliefs are smooth. Like wet sand dunes along a shore.
