About the artworkAyan Farah's textile-based works may initially appear to be atmospheric, and almost sacred abstractions. However, they also contain complex narratives marked both by traces of time and space. The RA series is linked to the family home that her father built in Mogadishu in the 1970s. The house was later destroyed when conflicts escalated and civil war broke out in Somalia in the 1990s. Decades later, Farah returned to the house, which despite its dilapidated state had been inhabited by several families. To protect the house from the elements, the artist hung worn textiles, which she had dyed with homemade pigments, over the empty window frames and holes. Six months later, when they were taken down, the fabrics had faded in the sun. Named after the Egyptian sun god Ra, these works allow light to pass both in and out into the world, through the artist’s windows.
