About the artworkReusing her own screenprint screens as a canvas, Julie Mehretu folds her past work back into the present, creating both a personal archive and a new cycle for her painting. The title, TRANSpainting (cross), points to the act of crossing − between image and abstraction, painting and sculpture, past and present. These crossings are central to Mehretu’s process, where layered marks and gestures create spaces charged with multiple histories and meanings. For Mehretu, abstraction is never detached from the world; it’s a way to process and transform it. For this series, Mehretu collaborated with sculptor Nairy Baghramian, who designed the aluminum frames and scaffolding that hold the paintings upright, allowing light and space to pass through.
