Ghosts
Perched beneath the ceiling, a few stuffed pigeons lurk like a vaguely ominous presence. They observe both us and the events unfolding in Anna Odell's film. While many see pigeons as a kind of flying rat, in their white form they symbolise both peace and the Holy Spirit of the Christian faith. We humans, so accustomed to controlling and observing the world around us, now find ourselves on the receiving end of silent observation. Maurizio Cattelan often turns power hierarchies on their head in his work. Like many of his other pieces, Ghosts was purchased in connection with an exhibition. In this case, The Third Hand. Maurizio Cattelan and the Moderna Museet Collection which was on display from 2024–2025.
