About the artworkAfter studying for two years at the Royal Academy in Stockholm, Ninnan Santesson went to Paris in 1913. The following year, she fled the Parisian winter together with Siri Derkert and Lisa Bergstrand, for the heat of Algeria. The three friends sketched and painted there, easily finding models among the local people. "We get as many as we like, the whole town will know us soon," Santesson writes in a letter. The sketches for this sculpture were probably executed in Algiers. When the sculpture, made of gilded wood, was presented in 1922, it was called Negro Head, but it has also been exhibited under the title Monsieur Iffa. The personality of the model shines through the stylised features.
