About the artwork Cecilia Edefalk made her debut as a painter in the 1980s, when painting was declared dead and many artists were migrating to other media. Edefalk was early to adopt repetition as an artistic approach, painting the same image in different formats and in a variety of styles. Her work on the Elevator series began with a spiritual experience she had at a museum in Tuscany, where she suddenly saw an angel pointing at her. This was a 15th-century wood sculpture of the archangel Gabriel at the Annunciation, the moment when the Virgin Mary is told that she will give birth to the son of God. Somehow, a picture of the sculpture made its way back to Sweden. After a few years, this photograph inspired Elevator. Selected exhibition history Den tredje handen.
