About the artworkAstri Bergman-Taube grew up with sculpture. Her father was the art founder Herman Bergman, and even as a two-year-old, she was moulding men in clay. This is Sverker, eight days old. First she portrayed Sverker screaming, but then she noted that "it's entertaining to look at first, but then you start thinking: Are you ever going to stop screaming?"
She was fascinated by the face of the newborn infant, before the baby fat begins to fill out the features. The portrait of Sverker expresses both the vulnerability and the primordial power of the infant. Bergman-Taube first studied sculpture at Tekniska skolan and at the Art Academy in Stockholm, and then for Antoine Bourdelle in Paris.
