About the artworkÅke Törner’s work was characterised by a constructive style with surrealistic undertones. He often explored perceptions of space using only a few visual elements. Shaped by his working-class background and strong political and environmental convictions, he created tranquil artworks charged with meaning. With its mutilated tree trunks, Röda rötter (Red roots) depicts an assault on nature in a subtle and thoughtful way. This piece was created in response to the “Battle of the Elms”, which took place in Kungsträdgården, Stockholm, in 1971. Protesters gathered to stop the felling of several elm trees to make way for a new underground entrance. The protesters won, and the elms were spared. This conflict became a symbol of the environmental movement and had a significant impact on future urban planning.
