About the artworkCeija Stojka began drawing and writing forty years after her experiences in the Nazi concentration camps, where as a child she witnessed inhuman cruelty. Her drawings depict the empty landscapes of the camps, the barbed wire and the shadows of suffering people. By writing brief texts directly onto her drawings, such as I cannot suffer, it is enough to draw, she shows how images and words became a way of coping with her trauma and of bearing witness to it. Her art has been crucial in documenting and giving voice to the lost history of the Roma people. The decision to start drawing so many years after the war, ended the silence that markes the lives of many survivors. Within the Roma community, this was particularly significant, as they were often oppressed even after the war ended.
