To create this work, Igshaan Adams took the worn and stained linoleum from the home of a family friend in Bonteheuwel, a “mixed race” township southeast of Cape Town where he was born. The material, with its patterns and color schemes, is immediately recognizable to South Africans and carries specific associations of race and class. Adams approaches the linoleum as a found object, a witness to all that occurred in the private space of someone’s home, from celebratory moments to times of hardship and violence. As he explains: “Those marks and scratches are the silent records of our lives.”
