About the artworkFor several years in the 1980s, Ibrahim Elkarim was a home care worker on Kungsholmen in Stockholm. He became friends with elderly people and learned about his new homeland through their stories. The elderly became part of his life and family, and he began documenting the everyday life he encountered. This project resulted in a series of B/W portraits of pensioners and their homes. Today, forty years later, they document an era and have been published in the book Se Människan (1991), together with images of old people in Budapest, Dubrovnik, Helsinki, Izmir and Prague. Back then, Elkarim already reflected on spending cuts in the care of the elderly, and the difference between growing old in Sweden and Sudan. He came to Sweden in 1965 and has been a practicing painter after studying at the Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design and the Royal Institute of Art, but has also worked in concrete, ceramics and glass.
