About the artworkHow can recent immigrants set the agenda on their own terms and avoid being pegged as eternal guests. Sandi Hilal engages in social art projects that invite encounters between people. In The Livingroom, she approaches concepts such as hospitality by converting a private space into a social and political arena, in response to the absence of migrants in public debate. In 2018, Hilal took the initiative to transform a room in the Gula Huset refugee centre in Boden into a living room. The project was inspired by the couple Yasmeen Mahmoud and Ibrahim Muhammad Haj Abdullah, who moved to Boden from Raqqa and wanted to continue using their home as a meeting place, which had been a vital part of their life in Syria. The work consists of a rich archive of material from their time in Boden (2018–2021), and an open invitation to future archiving of the work.
