About the artworkThe photographer Tommy Tommie was the co-founder of the legendary group Bildaktivisterna, which engaged in citizen photography in Stockholm in the 1960s. In the early 1970s, Tommie moved to Norrbotten in northern Sweden. With his camera, he captured moments when people gathered. The pictures show ice fishing competitions, cultural events, protest movements and industrial environmental damage, along with portraits of prominent local people. The black-and-white images are characteristically straight-forward and reveal a sincere curiosity coupled with palpable empathy. They include silhouettes of children in a flock of reindeer in Aitijokk, log floaters on the Kalix river, a black smoke cloud above the housing estate near the steelworks in Luleå. Or a ripe cloudberry, a familiar symbol of the region.
