About the artworkHe says that “A girl like that is just what we want, one we can have to ourselves, one we can trust, one we can protect and preserve and who is interested in her job. This is what 19-year-old Anna-Helén wrote in a letter she sent to her older sister in Rickarum in the early 1930s. She had left the small farmstead on the Bjäre peninsula to “practise” with the opera singer Emile Stiebel in Stockholm. Her true personality – perky and lively – was gradually erased by the expectations her apron forced on her. She was supposed to be like family, but became a maid. Astrid Göransson, the daughter of Anna-Helén, describes this female life story in an animated film based on her mother’s letters. Directly on the studio wall, in full size, she draws with charcoal, shoots, rubs out, over and over again, in a process that takes a whole year. The soundtrack is a collaboration with the composer Carin Blom.
